There is a very strong possibility that the present Mayor of Motril could find herself out of office, thanks to a possible opposition pact.
As explained in an earlier article, the governing PP party lost its absolute majority and needs the PA opposition party to secure a governing majority. The problem is that the PA wants the head of Vice-Mayor Nicolás Navarro to even consider entering into a pact – the Mayor is not too keen on the idea.
However, the IU, which has one council seat, is willing to vote in favour of a socialist mayor, but would not form part of a coalition, however.
The idea is attractive for the PA because their coalition would only be two parties – much easier to run that a tripartite arrangement. Also, having the socialists as partners they would have a more ‘understanding relationship’ with the Junta de Andalucia, as is in the hands of the socialists.
Summing up, if the PA pacts with the present mayor the coalition would have a comfortable majority, but the ill feeling over Nicolás Navarro is a stumbling block.
On the other hand, if they pact with the socialist, they would only have a minority government but could count on the IU to vote in their favour in Plenary Meetings if needed.
It looks, therefore, that the present mayor could find herself out of office.
