Two Walks To Walk

ALM Hiking day out OnLActually, one walk has already been walked but no ex-English teacher can resist such a good title!

Walkers from the Almuñécar municipal hiking club had a good stomp around the Almijarra mountains, led by guides Enrique Garín & Francisco Novo.

The day out took in El Pino Cinco Ramas, El Cortijo de la Almijara, Cortijo and Cueva Colica, as well as the small pine-resin-collectors settlement, La Monticana, next to the hamlet, Cortijada Machiche, Masajate.

It was a long route, but the weather was ‘just the ticket.’

“Walkers who didn’t know the area were surprised by just how green the meadows are, the amount of water flowing down the streams and the woodlands,” explained Enrique Garín, adding, “On top of that, the views of the snow-covered Sierra Nevada [as its very name indicates] right up to the border with the province of Jaén, were spectacular.”

The next walk on the list is a 14-km one (18/04 & 19/04) and will cover a new area for the group, packed with streams and woods and will involve an overnight stay.

“Access to the Refugio del Ubeire will be from Huéneja along spectacular lanes and paths. A car will take the necessary bags and backpacks to be able to have supper, pass the night and have breakfast in this lovely enclave. For this reason, each participant should have two items: a normal backpack for the walk and another to be transported by car,” explained Garín.

The refuge has fridges, an equipped kitchen, a BBQ area, dormitories with bunks, a fireplace and nearby tap for drinking water. You’ll need a sleeping bag, torch, condoms (just joking!) and grub.
