The Archbishop of Granada has forbidden the Cofradía de la Veracruz of Motril from participating in the Easter processions.
The reason that the archdioceses took this step was not strictly because of the accident last year involving the said brotherhood: a large cross fell onto two of the throne bearers.
It is more because of the resignation of the chairwoman, for personal reasons, and at least half of the brotherhood’s governing board.
However the prohibition does not mean that the brotherhood will have to disband or that they cannot participate in future Easter processions – it is merely for this year.
After Easter, this very venerable brotherhood will reconstitute its board and leadership to be ready for Easter 2016.
One thing is for sure, though, the absence of this large and very popular procession will leave a rather large whole in the Easter processions programme.
