Easter Throne Accident

MOT easter accident OnLGood Friday wasn’t so ‘good’ when a part of an Easter throne fell off in Motril, injuring five people. The incident occurred around 20.00h along Calle Romero Civantos.

It appears that the part that fell was Jesus on the Cross, which toppled backwards.

Some eyewitnesses said that it was evident that the Crucifixion cross on the Cristo de la Expiración throne was unstable, as soon as it emerged from the Iglesia de la Encarnación.

Owing to the height of the cross, the whole thing had to be tilted backwards to get it under the door lintel, which probably didn’t help.

After the incident, Jesus on the Cross was borne separately in a horizontal position.

One man, a throne bearer, was hospitalized at Santa Ana Hospital with head injuries, but was later allowed to return home that same day. Three other throne bearers, who were immediately behind the throne, acting as back-up bearers, were amongst those injured.
