Whilst Motril fights tooth and nail to retain the ferry service with North Africa, on the other side of the Mediterranean they don’t agree with what Motril has done.
The North African, Spanish, enclave city of Melilla relies on its sea route communication with Málaga, Motril and Almerìa, so they were very pleased to learn that the Central Government was going to inject 25m euros to subsidize two of these passenger routes – great news for the distant folk of Melilla.
Then they learn that Motril has managed to stop the process dead in its tracks until the legality of the subsidies are established by a law court.
The Melilla local authorities understandably consider the well being of their city as their first priority, not the commercial well being of Motril.
The City Council Spokesman, Daniel Conesa recognizes that Motril desires to defend its ferry link is legitimate, “but not at the cost of 86,000 Melillenses.” He went on to point out that these maritime connections belong to Melilla; not to the Motrileños, because these routes are the city’s motorways that connect them to the Spanish mainland.
