Motril Cemetery Setback

MOT municipal cemeteryThe Motril Town Hall is complaining that the Junta has been quibbling over the latest site for the new municipal cemetery.

The old municipal cemetery is nearing a dead end, despite the new niches, which is why a totally new site is needed.

Now, the allotted plot, contained within the Municipal Urban Development Plan (PGOU) is in the northern part of town, but this was rejected because of the steep nature of the land would have caused the building costs to soar. So, in 2007 a new spot was found, in agreement with the Junta in La Nacla area of town.

The new plot has a surface area of 80,000 sq/m but… this second plot also had to be ditched because the A-7 went through it and gobbled it up. Better said, the autovia construction needed the area as a temporary rubble dump but with the speed that the Gorgoracha-Puntalón section was moving, the town couldn’t wait for it to become available again.

At last, a third location was found at 100 metres above sea level but closer to town, which belongs to the Junta. Although closer to town, it wasn’t too close, as this is not allowed. This new plot already has access and covers some 83,000 sq/m.

At first the Junta, it appears, was willing to change the category of the land from monte público (greenbelt) to público municipal. However, now Motril has received an environment report that is not favourable for the cause, citing the permeability of the terrain.

Everything has ground to a halt, the Mayor is fuming and the Junta is not budging…
