Thanks to Salobreña’s IES Mediterraneo and their project, Proyecto Cambridge, Salobreña will become a focal point for learning English.
The University of Cambridge and Salobreña have reached an agreement that will turn the town into an examination venue on the coast, both for local schools, as well as individuals, where successful students can obtain their B1 Language Certificate.
At the signing was the Mayor of Salobreña, Gonzalo Fernández Pulido, The Head Teacher of the IES Mediterráneo, Olegario Ranea and the Director of the Modern Language Institute belonging to the University of Cambridge, Jonathan Baum, as well as the English teacher at the secondary school and project head, Jorge Pintor.
As the B1 certificate has become absolutely essential for anybody wishing to improve their professional curriculum, Sr Jorge Pintor set in motion a project that would allow his students to obtain the B1 even before starting a university career.
“Nowadays, nobody puts into doubt the importance of English in a person’s CV as well as in day-to-day life, so this move is not only good news for Salobreña, but also for all the local area, because it will permit high-school students to be prepared in this subject before starting university,” explained the school Head, Sra. Ranea.
Mr Jonathan Baum, Exams Director for the University of Cambridge in Eastern Andalucia, talked about the linguistic levels on a European level and the importance of obtaining a B1 Certificate when studying for a career at university.
He also explained that from time to time exams will be held at the Salobreña school: those interested in siting the B1 need only apply at the school and when there is a sufficient number of students then the University of Cambridge will send an examiner.
