Motril Awareness Campaign over Agricultural Waste

workers retrieving dumped greenhouse plasticThe Motril Town Hall is in the middle of an awareness campaign aimed at farmers and agricultural waste, principally plastic.

The Mayor, García Chamorro, said that they are trying to get farmers to stop dumping plastic and vegetable waste on common land, because with the wind some of it ends up in the irrigation channels. When the rains come it could cause flooding if the said channels become blocked by lengths of abandoned plastic.

As part of the campaign five maintenance workers managed to retrieve 6,000 kg of waste in just one day.

The Mayor pointed out, however, that the the majority of the farmers were responsible about the disposal of their agricultural waste.

The Councillor for Agriculture took the opportunity to explain that next week improvement work would commence on the Camino de Serrecín, which has a length of 500m. This lane is the first of three that will receive such treatment, thanks to funds from the Plan de Fomento del Empleo Agrario.
