Lanjarón Blaze

infoca helicoperOn Thursday 4th, the day before the Rio Seco Alto fire, a hillside not far from Lanjarón went up in flames.

The fire, which was discovered at 17.21h, was finally declared extinguished the following day, Friday at 21.00h. In the meantime it had devoured 60 hectares of mountain brush in the Cerro de los Cañones area.

Thirteen aircraft had been used to tackle the blaze and over 100 fire-fighters on the ground with numerous specialized vehicles. The aircraft included three 2-engine amphibious aircraft, three single-engine water-bomber aircraft, five transport and fire-fighting helicopters, two large twin-motor, heavy-lifting helicopters and a command and control light plane.

Units as far away as Jaén and Almería had been called in

Although the fire damaged a cortijo, it was not necessary to evacuate people from their homes. Neither was the main road leading to Lanjarón shut, just a couple of tracks leading to the area were closed, so as not to hinder access for fire-fighting vehicles.
