Monday the 14th finally saw the reopening of the main thoroughfare that passes through Plaza Madrid in Almuñécar.
At 09.25h, the Mayor and Town Hall officials turned up to inspect the road surface and pavements just before the barriers were removed. So, after two months of being closed and 15 days behind schedule, traffic can once again circulate freely.
The road itself was ready on Friday but municipal maintenance workers needed the weekend to paint in the zebra crossings, paint the blue lines for the now-scant parking and repaint the lampposts a nice shiny black.
Benches and litter bins still have to be placed and shrubs planted, to put the finishing touches, of course, but there’s no hurry.
As Google Maps are always a few months or more behind, we have produced an aerial view of the square before the work commenced, so that you can see what has been lost and what has been gained. Just plonk your little street-view man down on the square and pan around.
One personal observation is that when I was walking back from Olivares Wine Shop with a decent bottle of red in my mitts, it suddenly struck me that if the bottle were to slip from my grip and break on the sandstone-finished pavement tiles, it would be a bugger to remove the stain. Fortunately for the maintenance department, I am much too fond of a decent red…
