Yes, unlikely Salobreña has been the venue for a nationwide chess tournament these last few days.
At the beginning of July we saw the Campeonato de España Sub 12 with both traditional and speed chess games. A lad from Aragón, Pablo Basquedano Coarasa beat the other 132 competitors with 7.5 points out of nine.
The feminine matches were one by Ana Nieto Rego from Galicia with six points out of nine.
In the speed chess category, the Motril lad, Mario Domínguez Ruiz, did very well accruing 7.8 points in the 9th and final round before losing a pawn to the villainous hands (joking) of Víctor Arce Benito from Barcelona, meaning that he achieved Third place instead of First.
In fact, in the sixth round Motril’s Mario (Super Mario?) beat the champion from last year, Lance Henderson.
Anyway, well done to the winners, well done to all the participants and well done Salobreña!
