The Price of Punching a Policeman

Photo Credit: noticias.coches.comJosé Maria G.J. has been sentenced to 5-years’ imprisonment and will have to pay 110,000 euros in compensation for punching a Guardia Civil Policeman.

The 33-year-old driver was not impressed when the policeman fined him for the incorrect use of fog lights when he was stopped on the N-340 in November 2011 within the boundaries of Motril.

Both the Public Prosecutor and the private, prosecution lawyer, representing the association (quasi workers’ union) for Guardia Civil had originally recommended eleven years’ imprisonment but had both agreed to lower the figure.

The reason for the severity of the case – quite apart from the little-recommended action of physically assaulting a Guardia Civil policeman – was that the blow had caused the victim to black out and fall backwards, hitting the back of his head on the curb. This caused lasting injuries, resulting in his being discharged from the service on medical grounds.
