There was a bit of a shindig at the La Herradura castle on the 27th of April to mark the 9th anniversary of its restoration. The event was organized by the CA/PA (Benavides’ party)
Numerous local businesses participated and hundreds of people turned up on the day. There was a motorbike meet, cheerleaders, live music and plenty of local-style food.
The castle was purchased by Almuñécar from the Ministry of Defence, as it used to be a Guardia Civil post, which is a military unit. The Town Hall paid 596,372 euros after the deal was approved at a Plenary Meeting of the Town Council on the 13th of September 2004. At the time, Juan Carlos Benavides was the Mayor.
Then in March 2005 there was a symbolic ‘retaking’ of the castle, with plenty of historical play acting and colourful period costumes.
