Aforados

SPN aforadosA person who is considered an aforado is somebody who cannot be processed by a normal court of law – he can only be tried by the Supreme Court.

Now, firstly, in the UK, Germany and parts of the USA there are none. In Italy and Portugal, only the President of the Republic is ‘aforado.’ France generously extends this privilege to the President, Prime Minister and his Cabinet Ministers.

But Spain is different – just a tad, because at present Spain has a staggering 10,000 aforados.

However, ‘only’ 2,000 are politicians, 600 of whom are politicians with nationwide positions; i.e. central government, senators and MP’s. Where things went wild, so to speak, was with the 17 regional parliaments.

The rest of the aforados are public prosecutors (national, regional and provincial), judges.

Now, some politicians complain that being an aforados is not all ‘a bed of roses’ because as their case is heard directly at the Supreme Court, there can be no appeal against a sentence. However, nobody would seriously argue that this evens out the advantage of having this ‘parliamentary immunity.’

Who controls the politicians? The Politicians do – no further explanation necessary to explain this very surprising situation, therefore.
