The sight of a double rank of towering palms with their crowns on fire and burning fonds dropping off was spectacular, so much so that some observers described the scene as very close to that of a firework display.
However, there was nothing vaguely entertaining about the view of the aftermath the next day; it was deeply, deeply sad.
There is little doubt that it was the work of an arsonist because the fire began at the top of the trees, some 20 metres from the ground, and not at the base. Besides that fact, there have been three fires of this kind since the 6th of November, and in the case of this incident, had the wind been in a different direction, then the fire would have reached the pines and breached the park perimeter.
