Three Councillors Lose Salaries

SAL Council Cuts OnLThanks to the new local-government reforms, three socialist councillors in the Town Council will no longer be eligible for salaries… *Sniff!* The new law sets the limits to salaried councillors according to the total population of a town.

Consequently, they will be giving up their posts as they say they cannot combine their public duty with their original salaried professions. However, they will still be available to vote in council meetings.

The said councillors are: Mª José Garcia, Councillor for Equality, Social Services & Commerce, Irene Justo, Councillor for Tourism and First Councillor for la Caleta, as well as Javier Ortega, who was in charge of Maintenance and Public Works, Sports and Cemeteries (nice combination!).

“The Councillors have taken this decision voluntarily after a series of meetings and this exercise in responsibility honours them,” said the Mayor, Gonzalo Fernández Pulido.

The Mayor, who qualified the new law as “an invasion by the State into municipal affairs,” announced that there would be a cabinet reshuffle to cover the holes, so to speak. He went on to complain that this move was taking the country back to a time when “only the rich could afford to dedicate themselves to politics.”

Editorial Comment: Only three? This country could do with cutting back 50% on political salaries and politicians in general. About the only decent move that the Central Government has done in two years.
