Absent Councillors Should Be Punished

ALM fermin 01The Local IU party of Almuñécar has expressed its displeasure at continued absences by some Councillors at Plenary Meetings. They consider it irresponsible.

“It is unacceptable in any town council where there exists a public responsibility to represent a sector of the general public, for there to be unjustified absences at a decision-taking body, such as a Plenary Meeting,” said party leader, Fermín Tejero.

He added, “It is even more unacceptable when the person concerned receives a salary from the public purse.”

According to this IU written submission, lodged at the Municipal Registry on the 23rd of December, 2013, Councillors only have to find the time to attend to just one monthly ordinary Plenary Meeting, yet some opposition councillors fail to do even this.

For this reason, the IU publicly calls upon the governing party to adopt the following punitive measures:

1. A councillor who misses this monthly meeting should lose that month’s salary if they do not have justification for their absence.

2. The names of the Councillors that miss the monthly council meetings should be published on the municipal web page.

This subject will be dealt with, no doubt, at the January council meeting.
