Salobreña has at last acted and is taking down the construction cranes in La Caleta. The Town Hall has not been able to act beforehand because of legal restrictions; they had to give the owners of the two cranes a period of time to act themselves.
The tower cranes, which have created a great deal of anxiety amongst locals, were erected twelve years ago for the VPO’s on the main entrance to the hamlet. As the work there has been at a stop for several years, the cranes have been left in semi abandonment, exposed to high winds.
A specialized company has been hired for the task of dismantling them, and will be using a 100-tonne mobile crane for the task.
The tower cranes have been dangling over the heads of the locals and more worryingly, over the local infant school. Whilst the Town Hall has reassured residents that the cranes undergo periodic checks, it has not diminished the concern of the people living under them.
The First Councillor for this satellite dependency of Salobreña, Irene Justo, said, “Although no peril existed, the concern expressed by locals is both logical and understandable.”
