Firemen from both Motril and Almuñécar, together with units from the forest-fire brigade (Infoca) tackled a Motril blaze yesterday
The fire broke out in the Los Alamos district of Motril around 13.00h yesterday (26th), which is near the football ground. The fire devoured brush etc as far as the Spanish Air Force base, bordering on the Las Zorreras area.
Nine Motril firemen, using the four fire engines and the adapted Landrover were dispatched to fight the fire. They were joined by no fewer than three Infoca choppers (helicopters) together with 15 of their personnel. Even the Almuñécar fire service sent a small vehicle and three crew to help out.
The wind made things more difficult, with gusts bringing extinguished areas back to life, and resulted in several plastic greenhouses and two cortijos being temporarily evacuated.
Twenty-seven members of the Policia Local were out, trying to keep curious bystanders away from the danger areas and the municipal tow truck removed four cars that stood a chance of being damaged by the fire.
The Mayor, Luisa García Chamorro, expressed her thanks to Infoca for their rapid response, as well as to the Almuñécar fire service.
Readers will remember that the month started off with a blaze amongst wild sugarcane and brush along the ring road between Al Campo and the Port Road, which resulted in several parked cars being burnt out.
