If there has been one overriding topic in Almuñécar in the last ten days it has been about the mysterious lottery winner.
Vincent or not Vincent… and which Vincent? Everybody has an opinion and nobody – well almost nobody – has the answer.
If you listen to the conversations in the Spanish bars you can’t help but come to the conclusion that many people consider being the winner of such a bloated prize is not all roses: your life as you know it has been obliterated and your future promises paranoia and uncertainty.
Just about everybody agrees that the sum is far too big; once you’ve sorted out your family, you still have far too much money. The average person has no idea or experience to be able to cope with being catapulted into that sort of wealth bracket.
But it’s not only the winner that has problems – one family up in the old town have almost barricaded themselves in after being dogged by journalists, bank managers and the curious – “It’s not us, leave us alone!”
Perhaps it’s nobody from town after all; maybe a passing tourist – even a guiri, perish the thought.
