The word sounds like a new way of expressing the Seaside Gazette‘s unerring ability to insert typos and grammatical errors into articles. But no! This was the name given by a company in Japan to its mascot. However, after watching hoards of westerners snigger into their palms, they have decided to think about a re-brand.
The company actually makes fridges, and decided this new oval-shaped mascot would be both amusing and fun for both the Japanese and western market. Unfortunately, they obviously didn’t run the idea past any of their western employees before going ahead.
Just in case your are wondering, Fukuppy is supposed to be a contraction of the name of the company, Fukushima Industries (no, not the same Fukushima we keep hearing about in connection with the tsunami and subsequent nuclear leaks) and the English word ‘happy.’ And it doesn’t sound so bad when you pronounce the words as a Japanese person would, “foo-koo-pee” but even than sounds just a bit funny.
Anyway, the company have decided that the mascot idea was a complete Fukuppy and have now confirmed that they are looking to rename the unfortunate egg-shaped chap. Who knows what they will come up with next… my money is on Coldasfuk, just perfect for a fridge producing company… no?
