Curiously, this happened on the junction just down from the Cotobro N-340 tunnel; i.e., just below where the recent fire occurred which consumed 3,000 sq/m of hillside, including a plantation of avocado trees. Evidently, the two incidents are not related.
The car was heading west when the occupants saw smoke coming out from under the bonnet and pulled over onto this junction. Even though they attempted to douse the flames, they were unable to stop them from engulfing the rest of the vehicle.
The Policía Local, fire service and Guardia Civil soon appeared from nearby Almuñécar and between them put the fire out.
Meanwhile, down in the village, many locals were concerned to see a pall of black smoke billowing up from the same area as where the brush fire had been; some must have thought that a pyromaniac had come back to finish what he had started only a few days earlier.
