The pressure group, Plataforma Stop Desahucios de Almuñécar-La Herradura, managed to stop another property auction that was set for the end of the month.
The result was that Rubén can remain in his house for the time being, together with his family whilst he struggles to prevent the bank from repossessing the property. He stopped paying his mortgage six months ago when he was laid off from work. The bank in question is Caja Rural de Granada.
According to Stop Desahucios, the law courts suspended the auction because “Caja Rural included abusive clauses in the mortgage agreement (clausula suelo) as well as exorbitant interest rates on late payment.” A ‘clausula suelo’ is a clause that will not let variable interest rates on a mortgage drop below a certain level, regardless of the Euribor.
The pressure group would like to thank locals who have lent their support and solidarity against this severe social problem, which, the pressure group claim, the Central Government denies exists.
We will be approaching Caja Rural for a statement.
