Antonio M.R. is now in prison, after driving his car through a church’s main door… he was hauling a trailer full of artichokes at the time… This surprising incident occurred in Totana (Murcia), or more specifically, in the Iglesia de Santiago el Mayor.

When asked to give his version of events, the 55-year-old man explained that he had harvested his field of artichokes and had tried to sell them at the local farming cooperative, who refused to buy them because of a lack of demand. Rather than wasting them, he explained, he had decided to hand them out to the locals.

He didn’t manage to convince the judge on this one, however, probably as he failed to explained why he needed to ram the main door of the church and crash down the central aisle, complete with trailer and terrified artichokes, in order to make this donation.

Fortunately, nobody was injured, although several parishioners and quite few artichokes needed to be calmed down. The Policia Local, using the municipal tow truck, managed to extract the car, the trailer and the artichokes.

Lastly, one local claimed that Antonio had suffered from ‘mental issues’ on a previous occasion.
