The Truth about the A-7 Autovia

A pledge made by the conservative central government that the section of A-7 between Almuñécar and Lobres would be ready for the summer was blatantly untrue. It was a knowing untruth because that section stands only half completed, six weeks before the arrival of summer.

The said Minister of Public Works and Transport, Ana Pastor, admitted that it was only 50.4% complete when quizzed by a socialist MP, Manuel Pezzi.

On the 21st of February, the provincial Sub-Delegate for the Government, Santiago Pérez López, said that if the problems in the tunnel (La Minilla) were solved, thanks to the urgent approval of a modification to the project, the Lobres-Taramay could be ready for August or September.

Curiously, on the 26th of November 2012 the Central Government said that the section was 52.6% completed, so between November 2012 and February 2012… the completion percentage actually decreased.

So here we are facing the more likely scenario of this section not being completed before the year is out – maybe next summer.

But the question is, will the N-340 hold up between Urbanización Alfa Mar and Hotel Salobreña? After months of work below the road to stabilize the hillside, the road surface is as buckled as ever, more so, in fact.

ex-Mayor for Motril and now regional MP, Carlos Rojas, was vociferous over the delays on the A-7 when his party was in opposition – he even went so far as to head a local pressure group to demand that the A-7 be completed, accusing the then socialist Central Government of breaching its promises and lying about the true state of things. Strangely, Sr Rojas has lost his “drive” on the subject and now dedicates himself to pointing out missing infrastructure around Andalucía, where it comes under the socialist Regional Government’s responsibility.

Sadly, the Central Government under Rajoy has clocked up a string pledges that he has broken; what he promised not to do, he has done, and what he promised to do, he has not done. The A-7 is just another example of this, unfortunately.
