Salobreña has a campaign called Caminos escolares seguros – the title of the article is the translation.
The idea is to mark out safe routes for school children, whilst at the same time, cut down on the use of cars for school runs. In other words, less urban contamination and healthier children from the exercise of walking to school.
Behind the campaign are a group of parents and the Councillor for the Environment, Martín Valenzuela, who have been walking around the town and marking with a stencil and spray paint the recommended routes for school children to use to reach, for example, the Colegio Público Mayor Zaragoza. To decide on the route, those involved have studied the traffic, family habits and urban infrastructure, such as pavements and pedestrian crossings, etc.
This is part of a provincial-level project, organized by the Provincial Council for Granada, at the request of members of the Granada Network of Townships for Sustainability (GRAMAS). The problem has always been the continuous traffic congestion in towns around the province, which creates a lack of safety for child pedestrians as well as a degradation of environmental factors.
