Illegal Fishing Nets Recovered

Volunteer divers from the Asociación Universitaria de Actividades Subacuáticas (AUAS) in Málaga, together with ones from the dive clubs, Natura Dive (Málaga) and Scubasur (Almuñécar) have combed the sea bed off Punta de la Mona for illegal fishing nets.

All told, around a dozen volunteer divers participated and between them found and removed two illegal nets, measuring 4m and 7m in length, of the kind known as trasmallos. Obviously, these nets were causing damage not only to the fauna, but also the marine flora.

The Almuñécar-based dive club, Scubasur provided the launch to transport the divers to the dive sites, whilst Divetug provided the ‘scooters’ and ‘torpedoes’ for the recovery of the nets from the seabed.

According to the AUAS, campaigns of this nature are being carried out, “because many divers belonging to clubs come across these nets during their dives, and witness what sort of damage they were causing and get in contact with us.”
