Almuñécar Flies Red Flags

The Almuñécar Town Hall has decided to raise the red flag over Almuñécar and La Herradura beaches after the arrival of Portuguese Men-of-War, as a matter of prevention whilst the situation is evaluated.

Despite the very small number of these creatures sighted off the beaches, the measure was taken because of the dangerous nature that they present for bathers.

A sting may lead to an allergic reaction. There can also be serious effects, including fever, shock, and interference with heart and lung function. Stings may also cause death, although this is extremely rare.

As somebody pointed out, a lingering visit by these blighters is all that the Almuñécar tourist trade needs as the beach season approaches.
