There’s a village in western Granada (Poniente) called Algarinejo with just 1,500 inhabitants, who have a problem with Mahatma Gandhi.
The problem is that some years back the Town Hall decided to name one of its streets after this great man. Unfortunately, the people who live on it find it too difficult to spell.
If we’re honest, so do most of us around Europe. Can you imagine, for example if somebody named the street that you live in after the Basque writer, Marie Darrieussecq, or the Basque football player, Txiki Beguiristain? That’s the problem you see, and the locals want a good, honest Spanish name, not Mr Gandhi.
it was the conservative Town Council that decided to do something about it, citing as the reason: “As it is not a Spanish name it causes a problem with received correspondence because it is difficult to write.” But of course, the the opposition disagree and feel that the reason given does not justify the change.
What is a small village in the the Poniente doing with such a name? The new streets have been given the names of Nobel Prize Winners, such as Gandhi and Martin Luther King.
Anyway, the street is now called, Calle Juventud and that’s the end of it, so that the village can now live in “peace.”
