Councillor’s Car Torched

Persons unknown have destroyed a vehicle belonging to Juan Manuel Jiménez Gutiérrez, PP councillor for sports, Civic Participation and Youth in Lanjarón.

The arson attack occurred during the early hours of Sunday morning shortly after the said councillor had returned home. Locals spotted the flames and reported it to the fire service and to the councillor himself.

The Guardia Civil confirmed that this is almost certainly one of several attacks against property belonging to members of the PP (Partido Popular) in recent months, including another councillor whose front door was set on fire.

The mayor of Lanjarón, Eric Escobedo has lamented the attacks and has said as much on Twitter, “We have not said anything before now as we were not sure if this was just a mechanical fault with the vehicle, but now we know it was a premeditated arson attack.”

The fire has resulted in quite a lot of comments in the social media networks, and it has almost become a political social network battle between the parties over the fires and damage. Meanwhile, the Guardia Civil continue to examine the remains of the vehicle to try and ascertain exactly how the fire was set, and by whom.
