Motril Ferry Collision

Fortunately it was more of a ‘knock’ than a full-on collision, involving a passenger ferry within Motril Port.

The ferry that runs the Motril-Alhucemas line, called Tauce, ran up against a port bollard, which automatically activated a port protocol. This caused an inevitable delay on its departure from the Motril docks.

The incident occurred whilst the ferry was manoeuvring within the port; between leaving the bulk-cargo area to the levante area, which is where the passengers terminal is.

Port officials pointed out that this kind of incident is very common and normally occurs when there is gusting winds. The impact point was well above the waterline and at no point was there any “breach of safety aboard.” In fact, one source put the damage down to something the size of a tennis ball, however, port protocol insists on all kinds of inspections etc.

The ferry, which should have sailed at 16.30h was still there as night fell but left soon afterwards.
