We now have the details about what actually happened to the Mayor of Salobreña.
The Mayor, accompanied by a small group of friends, was out walking near the Plaza del Museo in Salobreña at eleven in the evening on Saturday the 9th.
They passed close to a group of young people – this area is a spot where young people hold botellones (impromptu street parties). Suddenly, one of the youngsters started insulting him, calling him, “shameless, corrupt, thug, bastard” and “son of a bitch.”
Taken aback, Mayor Fernández Pulido first tried to ignore him, but the insults continued. Finally he decided to confront the young man and try to reason with him, he claims. When the Mayor asked the man what exactly the matter was, the man thumped him violently in the chest.
It was at this point that the people who had been accompanying the Mayor phoned the municipal police, who quickly turned up. As soon as the police arrived, the alleged culprit ran off with one policeman in pursuit, who managed to catch up. There was then a struggle during which the aggressor managed to strike the policeman and make good his escape.
As a result of this incident, both the Mayor and the policeman lodged official complaints before the Justice of the Peace. The culprit remains at large, even though the police have no doubt as to his identity – the man has a criminal record.
The Mayor has chosen to play the affair down, not wishing to propagate the impression that Salobreña is suffering from a great deal of social agitation.
