The Nerja Town Hall has resubmitted its urgent request to the Junta for it to deliver on the promised fire station.
The Councillor for the Protección Civil y Bomberos, Inocencia Quintero, can be seen here in the photo at the location for the said installations.
The problem is, she pointed out, that the present arrangement is inadequate as it lacks the “technical means or human resources” to cover the area, which includes several villages as well as Nerja.
Inocencia Quintero explained that the Nerja fire service receives the majority of call-outs in the area, operating in such places as Torrox, Cómpeta & Frigiliana, as well as Nerja, “This means a large population, which triples in size in the summer,” she added.
She says that the Board of Government for the Junta de Andalucia pledged to build a series of fire stations with the province of Málaga, amongst them, Nerja. Accordingly, the Town Hall set aside a suitable plot, very close to the junction with the A-7 autovía.
“However,” says Sra. Quintero, “we have been waiting since 2008 for the Junta de Andalucia to carry out its side of the deal.”
Editorial note: A lot has happened since 2008; i.e., the most severe global financial crisis in 70 years, which has necessitated huge spending cuts from the Central Government down, so it is no small surprise that there are not the same amount of funds washing around as when the promise was made… just saying.
