Fast and Infuriating

We all know that when we get a speeding fine, you are personally responsible for that fine, even if you are not in your own car… a hire car for example. However, it appears that the Mayor of La Mojonera (Almería) thinks that their tax payers are responsible for the fine when one of their official vehicles is caught speeding.

On the 13th June, the Mayor of La Mojonera’s official vehicle was clocked doing 150 km/h in a 100 zone on the A-92, heading towards Sevilla, and subsequently a ticket was issued to the address that the vehicle was registered to. It just so happens that the date is when the Mayor appeared in Sevilla at a meeting with the Junta, which would lead some people to believe that he may have been driving the vehicle.

So, does the Mayor (or whoever was driving) contact tráfico and pay the small fine and except the points? Apparently not, as the opposition party in La Mojonera pointed out, it appears that the Town Hall simply denied knowing who was driving the vehicle at the time, which in turn saw the fine increase to 900 euros. Then, to end the matter, (or better said, ‘sweep it under the carpet’), the fine was slipped into the pile marked ‘for payment by the taxpayer.’

The leader of the opposition, Francisco Navarro, wants the Mayor, José Cara, to explain who exactly was driving the vehicle, why the fine wasn’t paid immediately and why it eventually ended up at the door of the tax payers of La Mojonera.
