Three abseiling enthusiasts, two men and a woman, had to be rescued by the Guardia Civil after one of their ropes became snarled and they couldn’t use it to continue on down the gorge. Going back up was equally impossible.
The rescue team received a call out from the emergency 112 service at 21.00h one evening during the first fortnight of the month. The excursionists later explained how nightfall had overtaken them and they did not have any torches, leaving them unable to see, thanks to the riverbed being in the moonlight shadows cast by the ravine walls. Furthermore, they were only dressed in short-sleeved and legged neoprene suits, so they were beginning to feel the cold, despite it being late summer. On top of the other problems that the excursionists had, the woman was pregnant.
The 4-man Guardia Civil, mountain-rescue team started at the top of the ravine and began working their way down to locate the excursionists, finding them about 01.30h the next morning. The pregnant woman showed signs of hypothermia and anxiety attacks.
They were handed full neoprene suits and food, and as nobody was injured the group was able to make it down the ravine together, being that it was the only way out. Finally at 04.00h they emerged from the ravine, right next to where they had their cars parked.
Again, as nobody was injured, the rescue team and the excursionists all went their separate ways from there.
