Three Fateful Collisions

The first; undoubtedly the most heartbreaking, took place in Alicante and resulted in the death of a 20-month old child, after being reversed over by a speedboat, with her father at the helm.

The mother, father and baby girl were all aboard the motorboat, off the coast of Javea. The father had stopped the boat and the mother got into the water with the child to enjoy a cool swim – the father stayed aboard. For unknown reasons the craft went over them both. Doctors could do nothing to save the child, who had head and facial injuries.

The next incident occurred up in Ponevedra (Galicia) and resulted in an elderly man in a wheelchair being knocked over on a pedestrian crossing. The 51-year-old female driver gave a negative result when tested for alcohol consumption.

The victim, 76-year-old Rafael Calvo la Torres, suffered head injuries, even though the woman was described as driving at a moderate speed. Thanks to this low speed his head injuries and extensive bruising did not prove fatal and he was released from hospital the next day.

The final incident involved two women on bicycles in a head on collision on a cycle lane. Stop smirking. The ‘collision’ took place in Torrevieja, Alicante.

Both women were foreigners and one can only suppose that one might have been a Brit, more used to driving on the left. Despite the accident involving just bicycles and at correspondingly low speeds, both women were seriously injured enough to require being kept in observation in the emergency area of the hospital.
