The Guardia Civil has arrested five Romanians in connection with a spate of thefts on Salobreña beaches during San Juan. The suspects, between the ages of 20 and 35, allegedly travelled from Motril where they were residing to Salobreña to carry out ‘operations.’
All told, five backpacks were reported stolen on the night of San Juan, when milling crowds and plenty of alcohol made the thieves task easier. One theft report made by two young women from Granada, after returning to the city after the event, informed of a missing backpack, handbag, containing mobile phones, identity documents and sunglasses. Other reports were lodged in Las Gabias, Órgiva and Salobreña itself, giving lists of similar missing objects.
The Guardia Civil based in Salobreña took charge of the investigation and soon came across a witness who claimed he/she had seen a group of young men stealing from a rucksack before dumping it under a beach umbrella and leaving the beach around 07.30h. The witness described their car as a KIA with a Valencian numberplate.
The Guardia Civil located the suspects’ car in Motril, arresting the owner, which in turn lead to the other three arrests – none of them has a previous criminal record.
