A maintenance worker suffered burns to 35% of his body after an electrical fire broke out in an operating theatre at the Hospital Clínica Inmaculada, Granada. A second worker involved was also treated for less serious burns.
The fire service received a call out at 20.00h on a Tuesday after it was reported that a part of the hospital installations was full of smoke; specifically in the wing were the operating theatres are. They were soon at the scene only to find that hospital staff had already put the fire out, but that there was smoke everywhere, which was working its way up to the ICU ward. They managed to establish a barrier to avoid this, thus preventing the evacuation of patients. The firemen managed this by setting up a high power, smoke-extractor system.
The fire had been caused by a short circuit which occurred while two electricians were working on a large fuse box in the changing rooms next to the operating theatres. The short circuit caused a small explosion, which in turn caused the fire to break out.
