Politicians in general are not held in particularly high esteem amongst Spaniards; now more than ever, fruit of their own misdoings. For this reason, it is refreshing to find a politician that merits respect; not for his achievements, but for his total honesty.
Luis López, socialist, Member of (national) Parliament, representing Almería, announced that he was resigning because he didn’t feel that his contribution was ‘useful.’ He said that the Spanish need people that can get them out of the crisis, and he is ‘full of remorse,’ considering himself unequal to the task.
Is that not amazing? Here you have a politician that actually puts his country before his own economic well-being and his party’s interests. This man should be elected as Prime Minister! The average politician would fight tooth an nail to remain in his salary-compensated post, savagely fighting off anybody that could possibly do a better job than himself, but here is Sr. López giving up his position as a M.o.P. for the Spanish Parliament, because he feels that somebody else could do a better job and have greater merit to his salary, after dedicating 25 years of his life to his party, the PSOE, first as a mayor, then as provincial delegate and finally as a national M.P.
“Not everybody is capable of doing everything [some jobs cannot be filled by just anybody] and at times I have felt guilty when considering how others could be doing my job better,” he explained with admirably honesty and humility.
No doubt, his post will be filled by a more ambitious person with fewer scruples, which means that they will go a long way.
