Colliding Lorries and Road Works

Anybody that drove between Salobreña and Almuñécar yesterday will have noticed two things: a tail back owing to an accident involving two lorries, near El Barranco Enmedio, and the impressive amount of earth moving going on to stabilize the N-340 below Urbanisación Alfa Mar.

As for the accident, there is very little information other than that two lorries collided, the force of which turned a cab and its trailer over. The road at this point, heading from Salobreña, is steeply downhill, has tight bends and traffic coming the other way is in two lanes, with no separating barrier and is normally moving quite fast, especially in the overtaking lane, to pass slower moving vehicles. So, it is more than probable that the up-moving lorry was in the outside lane, overtaking, when it met the other lorry coming down – who was in whose lane has not be disclosed to date.

It appears that neither driver was seriously hurt. Furthermore, as the accident happened virtually beside a lay-by, the Guardia Civil was able to turn this space into a standby lane to keep traffic moving. Even today, the trailer that overturned remains in this siding, awaiting removal.

The other thing that catches drivers’ eyes is the industrious earth moving that is taking place below the main road, running parallel to the part that is badly affected with land slippage. The machinery appears to be literally building a lower embankment and stabilizing it with vertical piles.

Hopefully it will hold the road together until the A-7 literally takes the weight off the N-340.
