The 31-year-old, Chilean competitor, Renato Serrano Muñoz took the top prize at the annual classical-guitar competition in La Herradura, as well as the special prize, Leo Brouwer, which is awarded for the best rendition of the Dos Cantares piece by Antón García Abril.

The 2nd Prize went to another Chilean competitor, Esteban Espinoza, who is also 31 years old, whilst the 3rd Prize went to the 30-year-old Hungarian, András Csaki.

The Mayoress, Trinidad Herrera, who handed over the top prize, said that this prize marked a before and after in his musical career. Renato walked away with a 9,000-euro cash prize, a top, handmade guitar and another 700 euros for the Leo Brouwer prize… he also walked away, no doubt, with a smile as wide as a piano keyboard.

The runner up not only won the 2nd prize, but it was also the second time that he had won a prize in this annual competition of high international renown.

The Chilean competitors not only stole the show this year, but a fellow compatriot, Emerson Salazar, won the first prize in the 2010 competition! The 2009 prize was won by a Russian, Dimitri Illarionov, the 2008 one by a Fin, Otto Tolone and the 2007 prize by a Frenchman, Betrand Pietu.
