There are three projects being carried out in the village at the moment: river clearing, a road rainwater crossing and work on a new square around the bust of Andres Segovia.
The riverbeds, especially, Rio Jate, had become pretty overgrown since last winter and despite repeated requests from the Almunecar Town Council, asking the Junta to get its finger out and clean them before a flash flood pays a visit, nothing was done, which was when the Town Hall decided to do it itself.
Of the three river beds: Jate, Seco and Verde, the La Herradura one is the worse and the memory of the 2007 flooding, which occured precisely at this time of the month in September of that year, motivated the Vice-Mayor and First Councillor for La Herradura, Juan Jose Ruiz Joya, to get the machinery out and clear the Rio Jate.
Over in Almuñecar, the municipal maintenance services had already cleaned out the Rio Seco & Verde riverbeds between the N-340 and the beach, leaving the rest for the Junta, even though the riverbeds come entirely under the responsibility of the Junta.
A cobbled ford is also being put in place between the Rio-Jate road bridge and La Bamba, along the lines of the cobbled ford down near the chemist.
Finally, it looks like a mini square is being laid around the Segovia bust, with the old flagstones/paving being replaced by newer ones, plus garden shrubs.
