Even though the Motril-Melilla ferry service wasn’t inaugurated until the 12th of last month, almost one month later 8,463 passengers have crossed, together with 2,273 vehicles, all to the detriment of Malaga port which normally handles this traffic.
And it’s cheaper. But it’s not only about prices, because the crossing time is half that of Malaga and Almeria to the same destination.
The opening of the Motril line came late in the day for Operacion Paso del Estrecho, which began on the 15th of June. This flux of traffic crossing to North Africa and back for Ramadan is generated by the desire of Moroccans to return home for this holiday period, meaning that the return flow won’t finish until the 15th of September. Bearing this in mind, it is still early in the day to see how much traffic Motril will take from Almeria and Malaga ports, but the final statistics will probably give these rivals some headaches in the future.
The province of Granada finally appears to be taking off…
