Each year, Motril holds a swimming race, in which the competitors have to swim across the port. This year, not only is no exception but also marks the 70th anniversary of the event.
The big day is next Monday, the 15th, and you’re still in time to put your name down for it, if you hurry, and you’re reading this on the right medium because you can enroll via the Internet for the symbolic price of six euros… (in other words, 1,000 of those enduring pesetas). You can also wait until the morning of the event, but the cut-off time is 9.30 in the morning, so unless you’re an early bird, waiting until then isn’t recommended – oh, and it will cost 12 euros instead of six.
The distance of the race, known as the Travesia Grande, is 1,700 metres (nautical mile?) and the start will be brought forward to 11.00, to avoid getting parked on by the new Motril ferry on its way back from Melilla.
For young participants, there is also the Travesia Pequeña, with a distance of 600 metres and is open to all youngster born after 1999 for males and 2000 for females. This juniors race takes place at 12 midday, immediately after the main race.
