Fired and Rehired

One of the last controversial acts of Juan Carlos Benavides’s Mayoralty was the dismissal of five town-hall workers. The said workers took their grievance to court. Now the new Mayoress has made good a promise made as part of her investiture speech and reinstated the five municipal workers

The five employees found themselves without a job on the 15th of February, even though at least one of their number had worked at the town hall for a two decades. Now, thanks to an agreement made between the Town Hall and the dismissed workers’ lawyer, they will recommence work on the 1st of August, ending five months of uncertainty and anguish.

Alcaldesa Trinidad Herrera considers that there was no justification for their dismissal and apologised in the name of the Town Hall for what they had been put through.

On the 1st they will be informed of their new posts, in some cases, as their old ones are now taken, but they will be found a position corresponding to their qualifications.

Her promise, made during her acceptance speech, was taken up and seconded by the the PSOE; PA and IU; i.e., by all the political parties barring Sr Benavides’ CA.

The said workers are: Esperanza Cacin Aneas and Maria Nives Carrascal Guevara, had worked 27 and 24 years respectively as members of the Town Hall staff. The other three are Jose Manuel Garcia and Joaquim Miguel Requena, the ex-worker from Pena Escrita, who had been attacked by a lion, you might remember… his dismissal was seen as a veritable stab in the back by many.
