Let’s start with one of our favourites– the Rules Dam. Believe it or not, the subject of exactly how to distribute the water from this magnificent (and hugely expensive) edifice is now on the local political table. And, as you might expect, local politics is, to say the least, extremely local.
In other words, the NIMBYs (for our non-English readers, = “Not In My Back Yard) are out in force. I lost count of the number of ‘interested parties,’ but you’ve got the Andalusian Water Agency, the Town of Salobreña, the village of Lobres and, of course, the Junta de Andalucía.
Anyway, to nobody’s surprise, they can agree on nothing. While Molvízar and Lobres welcome the water because they both have interests in agriculture, neither of them want any supply pipes to intrude on their infrastructure, properties, roads, goat pastures or anything else. So, basically, don’t hold your breath.
