I popped into to see Susi at her veterinary clinic in Salobreña, which is not far away from the Tourism Information Office. Susi Mesa, who is originally from Las Islas Canarias, met her husband, Javier when they were both studying to be veterinary surgeons in Córdoba. As he is from Salobreña, they decided to set up shop there.
Speaking to her, you get the impression that it is more of a Noah’s Ark, rather than a vet’s clinic, because they are not only treating cats and dogs, but have also had huge iguanas, horses, eagles and even monkeys as patients.
The word seems to have got round that Hubara can fix up just about anything, because one day they heard the door buzzer go that announced somebody had entered the waiting room, but when she popped her head round the door, it was to discover a poorly looking – but irate – seagull sitting there, all by itself. By the way, ‘hubara’ is the name of a gull that is native to Las Islas Canarias.
The veterinary clinic is surprisingly spacious with a good-sized operating room, including full X-ray equipment. They also have a post operative care ‘lodgings’ area and even offer a funeral arrangement service for your departed pets.
The emergency phone number in their advert is shared with other vets in Motril, so should you have to phone it and are told to bring your pet in, make sure that you ask which clinic has responded to your call – the last thing that you want to do is turn up outside the wrong clinic.
How to find the clinic: running down the side of the Tourist Information Office there is a cobbled lane. At the end turn left and walk straight ahead until you come to an open area with a large lawn in front with several trees – Hubara is right there in front of you. They open Mon-Sat 10.00 to 13.30 and 17.30 to 20.30, except on Saturdays, when they only open in the morning.
Finally, visit their website at the direction given below and click on the English version, which has a far more detailed explanation of what they offer.
