Parish Priest, José Guerrero is leaving after 10 years of service to the village. The departure has been rather forced on him due to ill health, which he describes as a problem with his bones, which the damp of the coast is aggravating.
“If it wasn’t for my bones, I’d stay in La Herradura until the residents chucked me out!” He quipped.
But on a sad note he said, “It has been several days since I have slept, because I keep thinking that I have to go.”
He has been in the service of the church for some 50 years since his ordination in the cathedral of Cadiz in 1959 at just 23 years old. He then worked for many years as a missionary, firstly in the Dominican Republic, where he served for 18 years, then a further 14 years working in Puerto Rico. In 1966 he returned to Spain to Granada, and finally his last ten years of service here in La Herradura.
A greatly respected and loved man, he will be sadly missed in the village, and the couple of short conversations I had with him, I found him patient, kind and highly intelligent… even towards a repeat sinner from Inglaterra like myself. The Seaside Gazette wishes him improved health and a long and happy retirement.
