Plaza de San José

More work in progress in the Plaza de San José, where the work to replace the dodgy paving in the square is well underway.
Although early days, the work has got off to a good start and is moving along at a good pace, with an expected duration of around two months.
The company Chopi La Herradura S.L., with a budget of 9,166 euros, is carrying out the work.
The square was, more or less; the centre of the village, but over the years has lost a lot of its original importance as a meeting place and transition area.
It was originally built parallel to the old church of San José and in later years you could even park in the square, but in 1985 came the changes to the square that we see today, and the banning of cars from entering.
The famous statue of the Virgin was put up by a group of La Herradura youths in the 1960’s.
Today, most of the processions and events take a route that passes by the church and into or around the Plaza Nueva, and even the beautiful old route El Rosario de la Aurora also known as the ‘procession path’ has long since been lost.
Despite all this, the people of the village still feel strongly about their little square and most importantly the statue of the Virgin within it, and when rumours started to spread about the renovation work involving the removal of the statue, there was an outcry.
In truth, there was never even a discussion about removing, or moving the statue, but we all know how a rumour can spread and become exaggerated in a small village!
The work will continue, the flowerbeds improved, the signage made more pleasing to the eye and the all-important surface of the square will be made flat and safe… without even disturbing the sleep of Our Blessed Virgin.
