Local Works Progress

By the time this edition reaches your news-hungry mitts, work should have started on La plaza San José here in La Herradura.
According to the Town Hall, the project, which starts on September 1st, will substantially improve the roads with historical type road signs. The works are part of ‘Plan E’ of Central Government works and should provisionally last about two months and will definitely be completed by the end of the year.
The project is funded to the tune of 96,166.11 euros and the main aim will be to sort out much of the paving in the square that has deteriorated over time, more or less all of which will have to be replaced. They will also be replacing the plant pots with lower ones that will allow the use of more plants.
The work is to include an overhaul of the infrastructure in and around the square, such as the sanitation, public telephone and lighting. According to the Town Hall, the one thing they will not be messing with is the central axis of the square, which is, of course, the statue of the Virgin Mary, and officials say the works will not affect this central structure.
The Mayor’s representative in La Herradura, Maria Victoria Ruiz, assured residents that the changes would not affect the cultural value of the square, and she reproached some people by saying, “there have been a number of people collecting signatures on a form telling the Town Hall to leave the statue of the Virgin alone, when in reality, it has never even been contemplated that the statue should be removed during the works.”
